Material and light sell the SKU, stickers do not

Product shots look like cheap renders without stacked material words and named lights. Keep badges to one line, and lock the same face on any swatch grid.

2026/09/01

A listing photo is a material-and-light problem. GPT Image 2 will draw your mug; it will not automatically give you glaze, rim light, or a honest 3/4 angle. Skip those words and the SKU looks like a plastic toy with a “SALE” sticker wallpapered on top.

What actually breaks

We generated “Prompt Template ceramic mug, ecommerce hero.” Round one: glossy CGI, no handle highlight, four badges (NEW, HOT, -30%, Limited). Round two added “realistic.” Still plastic. Round three stacked matte charcoal glaze, visible throwing rings, softbox overhead, sharp rim light on the rim and handle — that is a product photo.

Lip-swatch and apparel grids fail differently: the model casts a new person for every column. You wanted five reds on one mouth. You got five influencers.

E-commerce cookbooks also stress language and marketplace: a US Amazon main image is not a Xiaohongshu lifestyle set. Say the platform if the crop and badge language matter.

The rule we use

  1. SKU + angle + finish. 12oz ceramic mug, 3/4 view, matte charcoal glaze.
  2. Stack materials and lights. Matte, brushed, rim, softbox. One of each is not enough; two of each is.
  3. One badge, one line. "New" or a price, not a flyer.
  4. Same face on swatch matrices. one person, identical head, only the lip color changes.

Example we actually ran

Weak

Ecommerce photo of a branded mug, studio, promotional badges.

Locked

Commercial product hero, 1:1, grey seamless.
Subject: 12oz ceramic mug, 3/4 view, slightly floating.
Material: matte charcoal glaze, visible throwing rings, unglazed tan foot ring.
Print: small white wordmark "Prompt Template" on the side, sharp, correctly spelled.
Lighting: overhead softbox, thin rim light on the lip and handle, soft contact shadow.
One small badge, top-left, text "New" only. No extra stickers, no lifestyle props.

For a five-up lip grid we added: same woman, same lighting, same camera, only lipstick hex changes across columns. Without that sentence, column three was a different jawline on both models.

When to open this guide from a control

material and lighting are the two slots that turn a render into a listing. face is the slot that keeps a try-on grid honest. Do not spend the copy slot on three slogans — that is how the sticker wall comes back.

Controls this guide covers

  • product

Name the SKU, angle, and finish. Generic “product shot” reads as a stock render.

  • material

Stack material words (matte ceramic, brushed steel) or the object looks plastic.

  • lighting

Call the lights (softbox, rim). No lighting keywords, no commercial sheen.

  • Lock one face across a grid. Unlocked palettes mint a new person per swatch.
