How it is built

A document or publishing layout is a page that has to be read, printed, or presented. The skeleton is a title block, a column grid, body text with a real measure, and figures or tables that align to that grid. You change the page size, the number of columns, the running header, and the figure count. Lock the language of the sample text and the hierarchy of heading levels. Paper texture, stamps, and mock binders are controls. If the model sets body copy as decoration, invents unreadable glyphs, or lets images collide with the margin, it is not a document. Specify columns and margins in numbers. Type must look like type, not a painting of letters pretending to be a page.

Watch-outs

  1. 01Specify columns and margins in numbers, not “magazine style.”
  2. 02Body copy must be real type, not decorative letter-shapes.
  3. 03Keep figures on the grid. Overlapping photos are not a layout.
  4. 04Lock heading levels. Everything-bold is a poster, not a document.
