How it is built

Character design is a readable silhouette wearing a personality. The skeleton is a body proportion, a head-to-body ratio, a costume that says role at a glance, and a face that still works in a small icon. The parts you iterate are species or archetype, palette, signature accessory, and the turnaround poses. Lock anatomy rules and the number of fingers before you decorate. Hair, logos on clothing, and weapon shapes are controls, not afterthoughts. If the model changes the costume every frame, forgets a defining mark, or hides the silhouette in busy armor, the character cannot ship into a game or story. Design the shadow first; if you cannot recognize them in black, the color will not save it.

Watch-outs

  1. 01Fix proportions and finger count before adding costume detail.
  2. 02Give them one signature accessory and repeat it in every view.
  3. 03Check the silhouette in black. Busy armor hides the character.
  4. 04Ask for a turnaround if you need consistency across shots.
